Our Story
In 2014, with years of student housing painting experience under their belts, brothers Jacob and Caleb Hancock teamed up to provide residential painting services to homeowners in the Lansing, MI area. Their shared passion for quality work and helping others led them to launch Standby Brothers, a company built on reliability, trust, and top-tier craftsmanship. Together, they worked with homeowners and property managers to complete a wide variety of interior and exterior painting projects, eventually branching into construction and multi-family work as well.
Around the same time, longtime friends and colleagues JT Delaney and Joshua Hartley founded Brushmen LLC after years of also working together in student housing painting. Their goal was to serve the growing student housing market, and over time, their work expanded into commercial projects, conventional multi-family housing, and new construction across Michigan.
So how did these two pairs come together? Here’s a look behind the scenes…
JT, Josh, Jake, and Caleb had all been close long before their professional paths crossed. Josh is cousins with Jake and Caleb, and JT has been a family friend since childhood. Their strong bond and mutual respect set the foundation for what was to come.
In early 2021, the four friends began talking about upcoming projects and how often their teams overlapped to support each other. It became clear that instead of collaborating occasionally, they could accomplish even more by combining their strengths permanently. In April 2021, Brushmen LLC and Standby Brothers officially merged, creating a unified team with shared values and a wide range of expertise.
Today, Standby Brothers continues to focus on residential painting, offering professional, high-quality services to homeowners throughout the Greater Lansing area. From cabinet painting and whole-home refreshes to exterior makeovers, the Standby team is committed to helping people love the spaces they live in. Meanwhile, Brushmen LLC now concentrates on larger commercial projects, partnering with property managers, general contractors, and developers to serve student housing, multi-family, and commercial properties.
